Dancing Towards Mental Wellbeing: Movement at Wivenhoe Park Day Nursery

As we delve into Mental Health Awareness Week from May 13th to May 19th, 2024, the theme of “Movement” resonates with Wivenhoe Park Day Nursery. At our nursery, we understand the connection between physical activity and mental wellbeing. We integrate movement into our curriculum through engaging activities like Diddi Dance and yoga sessions. In this blog post, we explore the significance of movement for nurturing healthy minds and bodies, and how we embrace this theme at Wivenhoe Park Day Nursery.

Physical activity isn’t just about keeping our bodies fit; it’s equally essential for maintaining good mental health. Research consistently shows that exercise can alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, boost self-esteem, and enhance cognitive function. For young children, regular movement not only supports their physical development but also lays the foundation for positive mental health habits.

At our nursery, we believe in making movement a fun and integral part of each child’s day. Our partnership with Diddi Dance and incorporation of yoga sessions allow children to explore different forms of movement in a supportive and encouraging environment. Through dance, they learn coordination, rhythm, and self-expression, while yoga promotes relaxation, mindfulness, and body awareness.

The Joy of Dancing: Dancing isn’t just about following steps; it’s about expressing oneself freely and joyfully. Whether it’s twirling to music, stomping feet in rhythm, or making up their own moves, children at Wivenhoe Park Day Nursery experience the pure delight of movement. Dancing together fosters a sense of community and belonging, promoting social connections and emotional wellbeing.

Yoga for Little Yogis: Yoga offers children a unique opportunity to connect with their bodies and minds. Through gentle stretches, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques, they find calmness. Our yoga sessions encourage children to manage stress and regulate their emotions effectively.

The benefits of movement extend far beyond the walls of our nursery. By instilling a love for physical activity from a young age, we equip children with lifelong skills for maintaining good mental and physical health. Whether they’re dancing, running, jumping, climbing, or balancing, they’re not just moving their bodies—they’re nurturing their minds and spirits too.

During Mental Health Awareness Week, let’s dance, let’s move, and let’s journey towards holistic health together.
