Nursery joins plant-based week

Last week at nursery we supported plant-based week through our forest schools. During our sessions we cook breakfast, lunch and pudding over our campfire and do our part by ensuring that all these meals are vegetarian including our lunches which are mostly vegan. By supporting a plant-based diet we are not only catering to dietary needs we also providing nutritiously balanced meals as well as lessening our carbon footprint on the planet!

We took our plant-based experience to the next level today, trying stinging nettle tea for our snack! The children put on their safety gloves and went foraging for the biggest, juiciest looking nettle leaves they could find. Next, we washed the leaves by putting them in to cold water and used the ladle to dunk them in. Once washed, it was time to start boiling our tea over the fire! After adding small amount of sugar and leaving it to cool, we enjoyed the stinging nettle tea alongside a biscuit for our elevenses. As we don’t like to waste, we even used the nettle leaves within our lunch by adding them to our mixed vegetables. The children had lots of discussions about this and concluded that they taste like spinach!
